Pizza Night in OTR

Thursday night has turned into pizza night at our house.  Our first Thursday here we went to Dewey’s.  Last week it was LaRosa’s. This week we wanted to venture into downtown Cincy.  After a few searches online, we ended up at A Tavola, a pizza bar and trattoria in Over The Rhine.  They offer pizza and bruschetta cooked in a wood-fired oven.

Over The Rhine (OTR) has traditionally be known as a rougher part of the city.  Recently they have been working on revitalizing the area.  There are many new restaurants there.  This was my first time to that part of the city.  You can definitely tell that lots of work has been done.

A Tavola was full of buzz tonight.  Even though it is a small place and was extremely busy, we only waited a few minutes for a table.  The tables were all wood and apparently are homemade by one of the owners, beautiful!

At A Tavola, the menu is very simple but everything on it sounded delicious!  They have a few basic pizzas as well as a few with some creative toppings.

We started with the dates…

dates, stuffed house sausage and wrapped with house-cured bacon, served with tomato sauce

…and the watermelon salad.

watermelon + feta + basil + red onion + olive oil + balsamic

Watermelon feta

That salad was one of the best salads I have EVER had.  I can’t wait to try and recreate it soon.  It may sound strange, but the combination of flavors was outstanding!  The watermelon was extra sweet and served cold.  The sweet and salty balance was perfect.  Yum!

For dinner, we shared a pizza.

brussel sprout, caramelized onion, fontina

The pizza was delicious.  The crust was thin and crispy.  There was the perfect amount of cheese and the toppings went very well together!

If you are looking for a new pizza restaurant in Cincinnati, definitely try A Tavola.  It gets 5 stars from me!

Both the salad and the pizza look outstanding! I can totally relate to the non-traditional salad, I’m somewhat of an unconventional eater and love to try new flavors and combinations. Plus, Italian is my favorite! If I’m ever in Cincinnati, I’ll definitely look this place up!

  2. Oh man.. I am going to live vicariously through your explorations of Cincinnati – I CRAVE LaRosa’s like nobody’s business. LaRosa’s and Skyline. Sooo goood! You also HAVE to try Graeters. Black Raspberry Chip is like, THE flavor but they’ve got a great selection. My favorite is the Mocha Chocolate Chip.

If you ever need food/restaurant/bar/date ideas, don’t hesitate to ask! I went to HS north of the city near Montgomery/Kenwood Mall area and went to college in Clifton at UC and spent a lot of time in Mt. Adams, Mt. Lookout, Hyde Park, Downtown. You name it. :) Welcome!
